      Dental Implants: Frequently Asked Questions

For many years, dental implants have offered a reliable and natural-looking solution for replacing missing teeth. They provide a stable foundation for artificial teeth, restoring someone’s smile aesthetics as well as the ability to chew, eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

A brief history of dental implants

Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the father of modern dental Implantology, discovered the process of osseointegration in the early 50s and has conducted numerous research aimed at orthopedics, joint replacements, plastic surgery, and tumor defects. In 1965, Brånemark treated the first human patient Gösta Larsson with titanium dental implants who was missing teeth due to jaw deformities. Larsson passed away in 2006 and used his implants for more than 40 years.

Today, we answer some of the most common questions people ask online about dental implants.

      1. What is the success rate of same-day dental implants?

In the hands of a highly skilled Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and with the right surgical protocol, the success rate of same-day dental implants is comparable to traditional implant placement, boasting an impressive 98% success rate.

Unlike conventional implants that require multiple appointments and a lengthy healing period of 3 to 4 months or more, our SameDay dental implant technique allows us to extract teeth, place implants, and fit a full set of temporary teeth in a single day. The final set of permanent all-Zirconia teeth is placed within 7 days. This provides our patients with immediate function, comfort, and a renewed sense of confidence.

      2. How long will my mouth hurt after implants?

Here at SameDay, our patients report very minimal discomfort after their dental implant surgery. Whatever discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications we prescribe after their treatment. The discomfort after implant surgery is much less compared to extractions.

      3. How long after dental implants can I eat normally?

Our patients enjoy the convenience of eating normally on the same day as their dental implant procedure. For the first 48 hours, we recommend a soft food diet and chewing on the non-surgical side of the mouth. After two days, you can gradually reintroduce solid or firmer food options, even on the surgical side, while avoiding excessively hard options for the first two months.

      4. How long do gums heal after implant?

Our unique surgical implant protocol promotes minimal tissue trauma, allowing for faster gum healing, around 6 to 8 weeks. While individual healing times may vary, our patients typically experience minimal discomfort and rapid gum tissue recovery.

      5. Is it hard to talk after dental implants?

Not at all. Your dental implants are designed to function seamlessly like your natural teeth, ensuring clear and comfortable speech.

      6. How long do dental implant stitches stay in?

In general, we try to do most surgeries without stitches, but when we do, we usually remove them after 5 to 7 days to prevent food accumulation. We also use resorbable sutures which dissolve on their own within two to three weeks, especially for international patients.

      7. Can I use toothpaste after a dental implant?

Absolutely! Brushing your implant crowns is advised for maintaining optimal oral health. Treat your implant crowns as you would your natural teeth, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. You can brush your teeth the same day as your surgery, however, exercise gentle care around the implant crown for the first 48 hours post-surgery to allow for initial healing.

      8. How should I sleep after a dental implant?

Patients can sleep normally after their dental implant surgery.

      9. Can I drink water after dental implant surgery?

Yes, you can drink water after your surgery.

      10. Can I eat immediately after dental implant surgery?

We advise our patients to eat after their anesthesia has worn off to avoid accidentally biting their tongue, cheek, or surgical site. The same thing goes for consuming hot beverages – wait until the numbing subsides to avoid accidental burns or injuries.

      11. Can I eat ice cream after a dental implant?

Yes, you can. You can have ice cream or other food but try to wait until your anesthesia wears off. A soft food diet is recommended in the first 48 hours of your surgery, such as pudding, mashed potatoes, yogurt, eggs, soups, broths, smoothies, milkshakes, soft bread, and pasta.

      12. Does salt water help heal dental implants?

Yes, it is advisable to do saltwater rinses after your implant surgery. Use a teaspoon of salt in warm water, and gently rinse multiple times a day, especially after meals.

      13. Can I use a mouthwash after my dental implant surgery?

Yes, you can. You can use chlorhexidine mouthwash as prescribed by your surgeon.

Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. If you're seeking a Dubai-based practice specializing in safe and modern dental implant techniques, visit SameDay Dental Clinic for a complimentary consultation.
